Night Circus Discussion Topic

Hey everyone!  On the topic of The Night Circus:

I was so enraptured by the descriptions of the various tents at Le Cirque du Rêves.  The way things were painted made them seem so dreamlike (of course) and vivid.  I think my favorite tent to picture visiting was the cloud maze.  Jumping and climbing through cottony-soft levels, free-falling to safety at the bottom.  And the descriptions of the clock at the entrance were so minute in detail that I can close my eyes and SEE it!

What was your favorite tent/magical detail of Le Cirque du Rêves?

Greek Layered Dip

  • 4 teaspoons Greek seasoning
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 16-ounce container prepared hummus
  • 1 1/2 cups tzatziki (gyro sauce)*
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 2 medium roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 diced red onion
  • 1/2 cup kalamata olives, chopped
  • 1 4-ounce container crumbled feta cheese
In a large skillet, brown the ground turkey with the garlic salt and Greek seasoning, and add lemon juice toward the end of the cooking process. Set aside. In a shallow 1 1/2-quart dish, spread the hummus on the bottom. Top with a layer of ground turkey, then the tzatziki. Layer with the lettuce, tomatoes, onion, olives and feta. Serve the dip at room temperature with pita chips.

Leilani’s improvised tzatziki:

  • 12 ounces plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 2 tsp dill
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
Combine all ingredients, and let sit overnight if possible.
a few notes on this recipe – I originally saw it in Food Network Magazine, but I’ve changed it a bit and added a few things.  It originally called for ground lamb, but turkey has always worked well for me.  Also, I usually use more feta – the recipe calls for 4 oz, but I’m pretty sure I’ve used at least 6 oz every time I’ve made it.  And the tzatziki is totally made up – the measurements are approximate, because I just did everything to taste when I actually made it.  It’s also best to put everything together in the layers as close to serving time as possible, otherwise it gets a bit watery.  But still delicious!

general site layout

I’m bored at work, so I’m messing around with this thing again.  I removed the archive widget, because it would only let it archive by month posted.  Which really isn’t as handy as it sounds. I figured as long as we have the tag cloud there, it’s a more efficient way to quickly access older posts about specific books we’ve discussed in the past!

Also, where is everyone else?  Come on, HighFivers!  We need to get everyone signed up here, and get a date picked for our next meeting!  Also, I’ll post the recipe for the Greek dip tonight.  Yum!
